The Empire State Building. Cowboy Films. The Grand Canyon. Elvis Presley. The Golden Gate Bridge. Mickey Mouse. Baseball. All these things set America apart from the rest of the world. Unfortunately, so does obesity.

According to a 2009 study, Americans rank number one in the world for obesity. 30% of Americans are considered obese, which means a BMI (body mass index) greater than 30. Americans gain an average of one pound a year, ensuring our fine country the top spot on the list. Trailing at a distance are Mexico and the United Kingdom. France, with all its wine, cheese, and croissants, ranks number 23.

Just like the rest of Americans, senior citizens are becoming heavier. In the last 17 years, obesity rates among seniors doubled.

More than an issue of vanity, obesity is a serious health concern, and many health issues that affect seniors are linked to weight problems. Obesity is the leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke, and is also associated with cancer, diabetes, gallbladder disease, gallstones, osteoarthritis, gout, hypertension, depression, breathing problems and sleep apnea. Not surprisingly, disability rates are higher among seniors who are obese.

A recent study from UCLA found that older, overweight adults with high BMI have significantly smaller brains that those of a healthier weight. The brain was particularly affected in areas that control planning and memory, which researchers link to dementia in seniors. For more information on the study, visit www.agingresearch.org.

Weight loss is an important preventative health measure at any age. If you, like most Americans, struggle with your weight, be encouraged! Research shows that losing just 10 or 20 pounds can bring significant health improvements and lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Make small changes to your diet and exercise habits today to begin moving in the right direction.
